Swedish government issues guidelines for social media
January 5th, 2011
Nick HaC
The Swedish government is in the process of drawing up clear guidelines for how government agencies should behave with regard to social media. There is a focus on having house rules, monitoring conversation, and having a team which is clearly responsible for social media; all of these are sensible blocks to put in place to make sure social media is appropriately managed.

Dell launches social media command center…
December 9th, 2010
Nick HaC
It is the kind of data that CMO’s would’ve sacrificed one of their limbs for twenty years ago.

Since the emergence of social media, only a few big businesses have really understood the value of it. Only a minuscule handful companies in the beginning of it all really chose to be methodical in their approach and exploration of social. Even then, a small percentage of said handful figured out how to use social to drive real results and revenue while steering clear of the hype and the buzzwords.
Many companies have been influenced by poor social professionals with a slick sales pitch and have been somewhat blindly investing in agencies, teams, software and staff…all the while forgetting about the overall objective-based thinking that they’ve done so well with other aspects of their business before we even had social media as an option.

Automated sentiment analysis is less accurate than flipping a coin
November 9th, 2010

When talking to customers one recurring questions is about sentiment grading. Should it be automated?
After much research we couldn’t find or build something that came close to the accuracy we wanted for our clients to be able to make informed business decisions. We spoke to third party suppliers, universities and our smartest geeks internally – whilst there are some good attempts and some great research going on we decided that humans still have the edge.
So when we are asked the question our response is – it’s best if you grade it internally (you can do this manually in our product) as you understand your business and how people talk about it, failing that you can outsource it to us and we can do it for you.
It seems from the article below we might have been right in our thinking….
“Automated sentiment analysis is less accurate then flipping a coin when it comes to determining whether brand mentions in social media are positive or negative, according to a white paper from FreshMinds.
Tests of a range of different social media monitoring tools conducted by the research consultancy found that comments were, on average, correctly categorised only 30% of the time.
FreshMinds’ experiment involved tools from Alterian, Biz360, Brandwatch, Nielsen, Radian6, Scoutlabs and Sysomos. The products were tested on how well they assessed comments made about the coffee chain Starbucks, with the comments also having been manually coded.”

Why social media is more powerful than traditional news channels.
November 5th, 2010

Yesterday I first heard about the problems with a Qantas flight on Twitter. As I watched the messages come through EVENTUALLY there was some official content put out by the business itself. Another great example of how fast news can spread on social media and why PR teams need to be equipped to respond rapidly to this. News reports we contradicted by people who we actually there and had the tools (well a mobile phone) to be able to spread messages and pictures.
Kevin May sums up yesterday’s events in this great article .

BuzzNumbers announced as Finalist for the 2010 Red Herring 100 Asia Award
October 26th, 2010
Nick HaC
BuzzNumbers announced today it has been selected as a Finalist for Red Herring’s top 100 Asia award, a prestigious list honoring the year’s most promising private technology ventures from the Asia business region. The Red Herring editorial team selected the most innovative companies from a pool of hundreds from across Asia.
The nominees are evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy, and integration into their respective industries.
This unique assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the actual track record and standing of a company, which allows Red Herring to see past the “buzz” and make the list an invaluable instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry.
“This year was especially difficult,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “Despite the global economic situation, there were many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products that we had a difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. BuzzNumbers shows great promise therefore deserves to be among the Finalists. Now we’re faced with the difficult task of selecting the Winners of the Top 100 Asia Award.
Finalists for the award are selected based upon their technological innovation, management strength, market size, investor record, customer acquisition, and financial health. During the several months leading up to the announcement, hundreds of companies in the mobile, security, Web 2.0, software, hardware, biotech, and clean tech industries sent in their submissions to qualify for the award.

Meet the Telstra Social Media Team
October 20th, 2010
Nick HaC
Of all australian Telco’s, Telstra is probably the most active on Social Media. While we certainly dont think all companies require dedicated “social media response” team, it is very interesting to take a look at how Telstra is approaching it.
